Lying in wait: A review of one of the quirkiest family stories
Lying In Wait debut novel by author Liz Nugent is a perfect and simple example of ambiguous family relations. The best thing about Lying in Wait is the usage of a simple plot with high induced sub plots and mesmerising characters. She uses the concept of fear and loss interestingly to build her story.
Laurence is a fat and chubby teenage boy who is the son of a renowned judge and lives in a mansion named 'Avalon'. His mother, Lydia, is obsessed with him and never leaves the house. His father doesn't like his obese condition. But one day everything changes for this very normal and joyful family. All of their lives turn upside down. A horrible crime is committed by his father and he eventually dies because of guilt. His mother is all alone with his only son and faces a hard time.
Laurence being unaware of the crime has all his focus now on his mother. But later, when he discovers the truth of his father's offense, it shocks him. He carries the truth deep in his heart for his mother's sake and they both try to leave the past behind. But as it is said the past never leaves you, does it?
Karen Doyle enters Laurence's life and changes it forever. But he has a dark secret to protect his family from which is linked to her deeply. Karen and her family are dealing with the tragic loss of her sister Annie Doyle who has been missing for five years. No one knows if she is dead or is in hiding. But out of the blue one day, Karen receives a letter from her sister saying she is safe and wants to be left alone. Is this the real Annie or someone is trying to fool the Doyle family into believing a lie?
With the plot moving forward, somehow Laurence is at last able to move on from the disturbing past and not let it control his life anymore, but what can you do if your own never want you to be happy? The revelations about his mother, her nature creates wreck and havoc for Laurence. It becomes very difficult for him to accept the fact that his mother is not who she has always claimed to be.
The extreme emotions of every character, the revelations, the hypocrisy will leave you gaping and in astonishment. The extremes a mother can go to keep her child close to him can be obnoxious and abominable. The book reflects a very emotionally manipulative mother and psychopathic in some ways. A woman who can do anything to keep her loved ones close to her, even if it is forcefully. The story provides enthralling characters caught up in their fears and insecurities. Vices that compel them to do things that they could never imagine even in their dreams. I will give Lying in Wait a 8/10.
