Everyone of us at some point of time have felt that strange feeling that we do not belong to this world and maybe some other world awaits us, of course the fantasy movies have only strengthen that feeling! Well this gripping book by Cook will take you to this parallel existing world under the Earth’s crust called Interterra, where genetically advanced humans live and have a very different alien world.

The story starts with a group of researchers, who go on an expedition to explore an undersea volcano, and out of the blue their submarine gets sucked in and they are transported to this whole new world that exists inside the earth’s crust. There they meet these advanced humans with extraordinary technology and skills and unusual practices. They abduct them as they thought that the researchers were trying to find them. The people there are immortal hence have the right to practise euthanasia. One of the most mind-boggling things I read was that the Interterreans have sexual intercourse through their hands, now that’s something. Over the time the earthly humans enjoy the new world but inside they all want to escape as soon as possible. The Interterreans have no such plans to let them ever leave due to the exposure of their existence.

Hence with this starts a plan to escape from Interterra, but do they succeed? The story is fast paced, interesting and just makes you constantly flip through the pages. This science fiction thriller is jaw-dropping and will just make one want more and more. Robin Cook keeps the reader thoroughly engaged with the intricacies, and surely makes one feel that this parallel world truly exists. I will give it a 9/10.

So this is one of the popular ones and also one of my favourites. Though Chetan Bhagat did not put much of a lasting impression on me from his previous books but this one raised a lot of questions in my mind related to our Indian society, our thinking, our habits, our perceptions , our stereotypes and how we treat people who don’t know English like they should be born with the language already wired in their minds even if it is not their native language. It shows how much the colonial rule has affected us from generations and still persists in our minds. How English speaking people hold the superiority on us than hindi speaking ones and how English still rules us not physically, but mentally. This story is a part of every woman in India. It very subtly but strongly brings out the deep rooted psyche of every typical Indian, it’s not always their fault, but that’s what they have grown seeing around, and our ideology is intertwined with our society and culture. The book very beautifully and satirically brings out the stereotypes and hypocrisy of our society and how our society judges women at every stage of their lives and most of the time, not intentionally. Radhika Mehta, the protagonist is an intelligent, sharp and hardworking woman with a “no nonsense to be taken” attitude but there have been situations in the book where she had to stoop down either because of emotional bonds and out of love, or because that is the culture of the society you have been brought up in (which can be really senseless sometimes).
